Kazuko Miyamoto, Untitled, 1972, string and nails, 172 x 182 x 2 cm. Installation view, 117 Hester Street studio, New York
EXILE Berlin is happy to announce a research presentation focusing on Miyamoto’s earliest string constructions. Following a brief period of painting (1969-1972), Miyamoto turned towards the creation of ephemeral wall-based works using only industrial nails and string.
These early works are in many ways transitional and their relation to Minimalism experienced through her (predominantly male) artist peers sits in contrast to her later presentations as a member of the women art collective A.I.R.. Further the relationship to, and transition from her brief painting practice requires deeper exploration.
Many of the works in the exhibition have not been installed since their original date of creation in Miyamoto’s studio on 117 Hester Street, New York in 1972. Alongside the actual string constructions, a selection of drawings done in relation to the works on display are installed.
Early String Constructions is a research presentation into these early wall-based works by Miyamoto with the aim to preserve and better understand Mayamoto’s creative development towards an increasingly expansive artistic practice.
