“I (…) had an urge to exhibit these words in an exhibition. I imagined a single word as a sign on a wall as the only contents of the entire exhibition (the first project was the word “horizon”). But the cultural atmosphere of the time had changed quite drastically and an exhibition of that sort was unthinkable. In 1971 I nevertheless showed a single word in an exhibition of Czech concrete artists in Brno (…). It was the last opportunity to present such a work, all by itself, in an official exhibition space.” (Jiří Valoch interviewed by Hans-Ulrich Obrist, published in: The Czech Files, JRP Ringier, Zurich, 2015)
The exhibition another possibility presents four wall-based works by Czech artist Jiří Valoch (born 1946, lives and works in Brno). By the late 1970s, Valoch was barred from publicly exhibiting his work in Czechoslovakia but continued to create concepts for wall-based works in private, using typewriter and pencil on standard A4 sized paper. Together with the artist, four of these concepts were selected and will be shown for the first time as wall-based work and as originally intended by Valoch.
Valoch has extensively exhibited as part of national and international solo-, and group exhibitions, such as at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, mumok, Vienna, ZKM, Karlsruhe, National Gallery, Prague, FJK3, Vienna and Museion, Bolzano. In 2023, Valoch was awarded
Le Prix d’Honneur Bernard Heidsieck-Centre Pompidou for his contribution to the use of text in intermedia art practice outside contexts of traditional literature. Works by Jiří Valoch are included in institutional collections such as Tate Modern, London, Archiv der Avantgarden/Dresden State Art Collection, MACBA Barcelona, ZKM Karlsruhe, Kontakt Collection, Vienna,
National Gallery Prague, Museum of Contemporary Art Krakow, Moravian Gallery Brno.
The exhibition follows up on last year’s exhibition of Valoch at →EXILE Erfurt and is again organised in collaboration with Jana Písaříková and Ondřej Chrobák, Moravian Gallery, Brno and Anna Ebner-Quadri, and the editions, Vienna.
